"The Untitled" is a fantasy novel that I've been working on for quite a few years now. As a music and English double major at UCF, I wanted to combine my musical and creative writing ideas into a piece for Composition I.
Warna is the world that I have created for my characters. Warna is a world within our world. Humanoid creatures called inklings live in the core of the Earth, called Warna, which is essentially split into a color wheel with light and darkness in the middle. Inklings each have an aura of a color, and they live in their assigned color quadrant of Warna. The inklings survive to control all color on the Earth's crust by protecting color power-sources called color capsules.
In Indonesian, Warna means "color". But Warna also has the English word "war" in it, which is not a coincidence in my choosing of it. Warna is controlled by power-hungry and narcissistic inklings, who our main characters try to fight. But in their fight, they make terrible and rash decisions that lead to Warna becoming a place of war and dystopia.
In this piece, I attempt to convey the beauty of the colorful core of the Earth while creating tension and emotion to convey the injustice and darkness at hand in the background of Warna’s government, or the Elida Council System.
The melody for this piece is something that I have been playing on piano for a few years now, and I came up with it while thinking about the story that I am creating. It has been exciting to put this motive into a full piece for solo piano to present to people officially for the first time.
With potential (a phrase used in the novel),
Anna Lesnick
