The phrase "memento mori" is a trope found throughout art and history, and it translates in Latin to "remember that you [have to] die."
The inevitability of death is something that haunts the human species, and that is what my piece Memento Mori is about.
Sometimes, it is very easy to get deep in thought about death and what happens after, if anything. This piece journeys through those deep and panicked thoughts surrounding death, but the piece also explores the "carpe diem" or "seize the day" side of memento mori. It's all about living life to the fullest even while the specter of death lingers.
This piece is written for four layered electric keyboards, each set to a different instrument/sound setting. Memento Mori explores an electronic instrumentation while tritones, minor keys, chromaticism, layering, and dissonance create a dark sound world.
The piece can either be played by four pianists, or can be played by one pianist with a click track in their ear and layered after.
I hope this piece takes you on a journey;
Memento Mori!
