Journey Through Growing Up is a piece that means a lot to me. It’s a four movement piece for a quartet of two violins, a flute, and a bass clarinet. The piece is based on the feeling of mourning that many experience when you look back at your childhood and miss the innocence that you had. It is about that feeling of not knowing what you had until it’s gone, but growing to accept the fact that your childhood is gone.

Each movement is a different stage in the acceptance of growing up.

  • Imagination and Innocence is all about the pure innocence of the big imagination that you have as a child.
  • The Mature World is about getting older and realizing that the world is darker and harder than you ever knew it would be as a child.
  • The Little Things is about how although you are older, you can still appreciate the little things in life as a happy child does.
  • Child at Heart is about accepting that your childhood is over, but also knowing that you will always be a child at heart, and that that imaginative and beautiful part of yourself will never truly be gone.

I hope that this piece hits home with you as much as it has hit home with me while writing it.

This piece is dedicated to children at heart.
